Instead of Closing Gov’t, Cancel Halloween

The real "trick" on Halloween is watching American consumers shell out a soft 6 Billion dollars on costumes and Kit-Kats. The "souls" from Medieval Ireland and Scotland must be doing cartwheels in their graves watching the Colonist embellish some primitive rituals of wearing painted sackcloth and exchanging prayers to departed souls (All Souls Day-Nov. 2nd in Catholic tradition) for fruit and shillings. Fast forward 500 years and cable starts the reruns of Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and the Blair Witch Project to set the tone for All Hallows Eve. HMMM ? ? Have we missed something here? Nevertheless, I do have the pleasant memory of "Trick or Treating for UNICEF" back in the mid-sixties. Maybe the U.N. did get the "Medieval shilling exchange" practice right…
