5 Pieces “Over Easy”

In the grey existential 1970 movie drama "5 Easy Pieces" the classical pianist in training Catherine van Oost (played by Susan Anspach) cuts thru Bobby Dupea's (Jack Nicholson) superficial prompts saying, "You're a strange person, Robert. I mean, what will you come to? If a person has no love for himself,no respect for himself, no love of his friends, family, work, something – how can he ask for love in return? I mean, why should he ask for it?" Though not Plato or Shakespeare, Catherine has landed on the ultimate quest and question. First, she hit a grand slam in seeing that Robert's sieve-like heart would only leak out any love poured into it. In other words, no amount of tenderness or compassion would ever fill his void that was ruled by a decree the world owed him satisfaction for his misery. Yet, the question remains…where do broken, crushed, abandoned people find relief from a legitimate emotional gangrene?
