When faced with the imminent reality of his death in U-boat 96, the young German war correspondent officer becomes broken, humble and transparent with the boat's captain in the 1981 movie classic "das Boot." . Lt. Werner confesses his naivete over his zeal in thinking the measure of a man was not blinking when "heading inexorable into the grand and cruel reality of feverish battle." Werner states he was drunk with such pompous machisimo. He ends his anquished confession in pathetic tears saying that inexorable grief and hopelessness were more the measure of impending death in war.
