Seismic Shift To “Story” Model

Is it a "post-modern" (less linear, more elastic and comprehensive) thing that the shift in entertainment has moved into a more fluid, continuous narrative concept? OK, the old approach of having to produce a movie or TV show within a 2 hour window is no longer offering enough "creative" azimuths to delve into the complexities of the key characters and storyline. When viewers can "connect" empathetically with a character's plight and a plot over an extended period of time it becomes more personal and realistic for some reason. "Story" touches people, because people are looking for meaning.
